Outdoor fire pits, also sometimes called a "chinook," generally consists of a horizontal kettle surrounded on the top and sides by a steel mesh grate so the fire can be viewed from all sides. This grate allows air to reach the flames, and keeps the fuel (wood, charcoal, leaves, paper) from rolling out of the fire or blowing away. It also allows for heat disbursal on all sides. Outdoor fire pits are typically manufactured of iron or copper.
Some people like to cook over their outdoor fire pit, which is possible if your unit has an additional grilling rack placed above the flames. Be sure to use wood or charcoal only if you do use your fire pit as a cooking grill, as paper and various other materials may contain chemicals which could add toxins to your food.
A nice outdoor fire pit can be had for between $100 and $300, though some deluxe models may run slightly higher. If you want to consider something larger and perhaps more permanent than a fire pit, you should also look into outdoor fireplaces.
